Dental Hygiene at Edinburgh Dental

At Edinburgh Dental, we believe that professional dental hygiene is the cornerstone of excellent oral health. While many think of hygiene appointments as simply “getting your teeth cleaned”, they’re actually one of the most important preventative health measures you can take.

Our experienced dental hygienists are experts in preventing oral disease and maintaining your dental health for life. They’re also experts at spotting early warning signs of potential issues long before they become problems requiring more extensive treatment.

Our Hygiene Services

Professional Dental Cleaning

Our comprehensive dental cleaning removes plaque and tartar buildup that can’t be eliminated through regular brushing and flossing alone. This buildup harbours harmful bacteria that can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and even contribute to systemic health issues.

What to expect during your hygiene appointment
  1. Comprehensive assessment of your gums and teeth, checking for signs of inflammation, bleeding, or recession
  2. Gentle removal of plaque and tartar using specialised instruments
  3. Polishing to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and looking brighter
  4. Personalised advice on optimising your home care routine

Advanced Hygiene Treatments

For patients with more significant buildup or early signs of gum disease, we offer:

Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

This thorough cleaning extends below the gumline to remove bacteria and tartar from the tooth roots, allowing inflamed gums to heal and reattach to the teeth. This treatment is often completed under local anaesthetic for your comfort.

Air Polishing Technology

Using a controlled stream of fine powder and water, this advanced cleaning method removes stubborn stains and biofilm with remarkable efficiency and comfort. It’s particularly effective for reaching difficult areas around implants, bridges, and orthodontic appliances.

The Edinburgh Dental Hygiene Difference

Beyond the Standard Clean
We take a thorough approach to dental hygiene that goes beyond the basic scale and polish. Our hygienists are trained in the latest techniques and use advanced technology to provide a comfortable, effective experience that delivers noticeable results.
Prevention-Focused Care
Our philosophy focuses on preventing dental problems before they start. Regular hygiene appointments significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and tooth decay, potentially saving you from more complex and costly treatments in the future.
Personalised Oral Health Plans
Just as everyone’s smile is unique, so are their oral health needs. We create individualised hygiene plans based on your specific situation, whether you have implants, crowns, bridges, orthodontic work, or natural teeth.

Why Regular Hygiene Appointments Matter

Preventing Gum Disease

Gum disease (periodontal disease) affects nearly half of adults over 30 and is the leading cause of tooth loss. Regular hygiene visits are your first line of defence against this progressive condition.

Early stages of gum disease often have no obvious symptoms, which is why professional examination is crucial. Our hygienists are trained to detect the subtle signs that might otherwise go unnoticed until the condition becomes more serious.

Supporting Overall Health

Research continues to demonstrate links between oral health and numerous systemic conditions, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory issues
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Alzheimer’s disease

By maintaining excellent oral hygiene, you’re not just protecting your smile – you’re investing in your overall well-being.

Preserving Your Investment

If you’ve had cosmetic or restorative dental work, regular hygiene appointments help protect and extend the life of these investments. Professional cleaning is essential for maintaining dental implants, veneers, crowns, and bridges.

Most patients benefit from hygiene appointments every six months, though some conditions may require more frequent visits. Your dentist and hygienist will recommend the optimal schedule for your specific needs.

Absolutely! Establishing good oral hygiene habits early is crucial. Our hygienists are experienced with children and make the experience educational and positive.

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) addresses plaque and tartar above the gumline, while a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) extends below the gumline to treat early gum disease. Your hygienist will recommend the appropriate treatment based on your oral health assessment.

Jack Rollinson

Dental Therapist

Running is a big part of my routine. I mix up interval training with longer runs and I’m working towards a half marathon this year. I’m always trying to improve my time and keep things moving forward. Outside of that, I play football socially (Everton supporter — for better or worse!) and I’m looking forward to the World Cup, obviously!

I originally studied physiology before going back to train as a dental therapist. I’ve always been drawn to science, but I knew I wanted something a bit more hands-on — a role where every day is a bit different and you’re not stuck behind a screen.

When I’m not working, I like getting away and exploring new places. That could be a quiet weekend in the countryside with friends or a few days in a new city — Lisbon was a personal highlight! I like keeping things balanced — staying active, trying new things, and enjoying the pace of it all.
