Dentures at Edinburgh Dental

Losing teeth can feel overwhelming, and the thought of needing dentures might bring up concerns about how you’ll look, speak, or eat. These worries are completely natural – many of our patients have shared similar feelings when they first came to see us.

The truth is, modern dentures are nothing like the ones your grandparents might have had. Today’s dentures are crafted to look natural, fit comfortably, and restore both function and confidence to your daily life.

Understanding Your Options

Dentures aren’t a one-size-fits-all solution. We offer different types of dentures to meet your specific needs and circumstances:

Complete (Full) Dentures

When you need them

When all teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both need to be replaced

How they work
  • Custom-made to fit your mouth precisely
  • Held in place by natural suction and jaw muscles
  • Can be enhanced with denture adhesive for extra security
  • Restore your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently

Partial Dentures

When you need them

When you’re missing several teeth but still have some healthy natural teeth remaining

How they work
  • Fill the gaps left by missing teeth
  • Attach to your remaining natural teeth with discreet clasps
  • Prevent remaining teeth from shifting out of position
  • More affordable than replacing each tooth individually

Implant-Retained Dentures

When they’re ideal

When you want the security of implants with the convenience of dentures

How they work
  • Dental implants provide secure anchor points
  • Dentures snap onto the implants for maximum stability
  • Can be removed for cleaning, but won’t slip during use
  • Significantly improve chewing ability and confidence

The Modern Denture Difference

Natural Appearance

Today’s dentures are crafted to match your natural tooth colour, shape, and size. We take great care to ensure your dentures complement your facial features and age appropriately.

Comfortable Fit

Using advanced impression techniques and materials, we create dentures that fit snugly without causing sore spots or excessive bulk.

Improved Function

While dentures require some adjustment, modern versions allow you to eat most foods and speak clearly once you’ve adapted to them.

Confidence Boost

Many patients tell us that getting dentures was the first step toward feeling like themselves again – able to smile, laugh, and engage socially without worry.

Dentures vs. Other Options

Dentures vs. Dental Implants

Dentures may be better when:

  • Bone loss makes implants challenging
  • Budget is a primary consideration
  • You want faster treatment completion
  • Medical conditions affect implant healing

Implants may be better when:

  • Bone density is adequate
  • You want maximum chewing efficiency
  • Long-term costs are less important than function
  • You prefer a fixed solution

Dentures vs. Bridges

Dentures are preferable when:

  • Multiple teeth are missing
  • Adjacent teeth aren’t suitable for bridge support
  • Bone loss is significant
  • Cost is a major factor

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern dentures are designed to look completely natural. Most people won’t be able to tell you’re wearing dentures unless you tell them.

Most patients adjust within 2-4 weeks for basic comfort, with continued improvement over 2-3 months. Everyone’s experience is different, but patience during the adjustment period is key.

After the adjustment period, most patients can eat the majority of foods they enjoyed before. Some very hard or sticky foods may always require caution.

Initially, you may notice slight changes in speech, but this typically resolves within a few weeks as your tongue adapts to the dentures.

Properly fitted dentures should stay in place through natural suction. Denture adhesive can provide additional security, especially for lower dentures.

Adjustments are normal and expected, especially in the first few months. We’ll work with you until your dentures are comfortable and functional.

Typically, every 5-10 years, though this varies based on wear, changes in your mouth, and your personal preferences.

While possible, it’s generally recommended to remove dentures at night to give your gums a rest and prevent bacterial buildup.

We can often provide immediate dentures the same day as extractions, so you’re never without teeth. These may need adjustments as you heal.

Investment in Your Quality of Life

Dentures represent more than just tooth replacement – they’re an investment in your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. The cost of dentures is often much less than other tooth replacement options, and the impact on your quality of life can be immeasurable.

We offer flexible payment options to help make dentures accessible when you need them most.

Jack Rollinson

Dental Therapist

Running is a big part of my routine. I mix up interval training with longer runs and I’m working towards a half marathon this year. I’m always trying to improve my time and keep things moving forward. Outside of that, I play football socially (Everton supporter — for better or worse!) and I’m looking forward to the World Cup, obviously!

I originally studied physiology before going back to train as a dental therapist. I’ve always been drawn to science, but I knew I wanted something a bit more hands-on — a role where every day is a bit different and you’re not stuck behind a screen.

When I’m not working, I like getting away and exploring new places. That could be a quiet weekend in the countryside with friends or a few days in a new city — Lisbon was a personal highlight! I like keeping things balanced — staying active, trying new things, and enjoying the pace of it all.
